Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder characterized by the presence of an extra 21st chromosome. The condition leads to impairments in both cognitive ability and physical growth that range from mild to moderate developmental disabilities. Individuals with Down syndrome often have distinct physical characteristics and unique health issues. Down syndrome occurs in approximately one of every 1,000 births world-wide, making it one of the most often observed chromosomal anomalies.

The Feuerstein Method has proven to be an excellent tool for children with Down syndrome. Unlike children with other cognitive disabilities, children with Down syndrome are marked by readiness to interact and benefit from the mediated learning experience. In many cases, the children have been able to improve to a level of performance equal to their peers, and are able to mainstream into normative classrooms. We pursue this option whenever possible.

The first stage of treatment is a comprehensive assessment. The assessment is composed of 3 to 5 playful, interactive sessions which seek out the individual’s potential strengths -- even seemingly minor areas of functioning can be significant-- and begin to build upon those strengths. After assessment, the team will advise the parents on how to talk and play with the child, and give recommendations for therapeutic and educational paths to pursue. They may also visit the child is his home environment or school, and offer specific recommendations for supporting the child in his natural setting. The team is happy to liaise with other educational and treatment professionals in the child’s life, and is also available for any follow-up and consultation that parents may seek.

If the child is a candidate for mainstreaming, we offer pre-school inclusion program which utilizes both individual and group therapy to prepare children for interacting in a classroom setting. Our staff will also oversee the subsequent classroom integration.
